ICT and school culture (two sessions)
Native, immigrant or dinosaur? Are you helping or hindering your school develop a 21st century pedagogy?
Wayne Morris (Future Edge Ltd)
Our students have changed. Today’s students are no longer the people the education system was designed to teach. Our students today are almost all ’native-speakers’ of the digital language of computers, video games and the internet. Those of us who were not born into the digital world but have become fascinated by and adopted many of the aspects of the new technology are excited by the possibilities. And then there are the dinosaurs – those who cling to the old with a reasoned logic and see little reason to change. There is a disjuncture between what and how our students are learning successfully outside the classroom and how they are learning in the classroom. The focus needs to shift from 21st literacy for students to 21st century literacy for teachers. Are you helping or hindering your school develop a 21st century pedagogy?

We will explore what this MOODLE thing is, how our teachers have implemented it and how it could be useful to you. Bringing PowerPoint back to life, especially in uses to support Literacy
Jes Roddy (Facilitator Wellington College ICT Cluster)
PowerPoint has been criticised for its use in reducing complex ideas to a series of bullet points. But it doesn't have to be used in this way. This workshop will look at a number of ways in which PowerPoint can be used to encourage creativity. We will look at non-linear ways of using PowerPoint as might be used in a decision maze, then look at ways in which the animation features of PowerPoint can be used in poetry writing. Interactive games of various sorts can be made with PowerPoint (a Template will be made available) and how we will look at how PowerPoint can be used in an ePortfolio. Finally we will compare PowerPoint with other presentation tools such as Photostory.

If there’s something that you want to do much better in Word, bring it along and we’ll tease it out for you. (Attendees: please note that the session is based on Word 2003. International advice suggests schools refrain from implanting Office 2007 unless hardware is very capable.)”

EXE
Warren Hall - CORE Education
EXE runs on Windows, Macintosh and Linux and allows teachers to easily create a wide variety of activities that can then be made available online. The types of activities that can be created include cloze activities, true/false or multiple choice quizzes, image galleries, gathering of external web pages and many others. The pages created can be exported in a wide variety of formats for publishing on a school LMS or website. EXE can be used offline so creating material while not on the school network is no problem and it makes it reasonably easy to create good looking content with little experience. Teachers can concentrate on the content they wish to deliver and let EXE take care of the code required to deliver it in an online environment.
